The Power of Belief

Jan 30, 2024

Belief - an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists.

Ultimately, a thought you think over and over that becomes a true for you.  Beliefs are powerful, which I'll get more into in a moment, but something amazing about them is that you decide what beliefs you hold.  You have the authority, permission and everything you need to decide what you believe, what beliefs support you, what beliefs hold you back and what beliefs propel you into living your best life.

This is your story to tell.  This is your one precious life and you decide what is true for you.

Let's talk about the power behind belief - starting with ways beliefs can impact your body chemistry.

In the realm of mind-body connection, the effect of belief on body chemistry is a fascinating and well-documented phenomenon. Our beliefs and thoughts can influence the release of certain chemicals and hormones in the body, creating a direct impact on our physiological state. Here's a breakdown of how belief can affect body chemistry:

  1. Stress Response:

    • Negative beliefs or persistent stress-inducing thoughts trigger the body's stress response, leading to the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones prepare the body for the "fight or flight" response, impacting heart rate, blood pressure, and energy metabolism.
  2. Placebo Effect:

    • Belief in the effectiveness of a treatment, even if it's a placebo, can lead to actual physiological changes. The brain, influenced by positive beliefs, can release endorphins and other neurotransmitters that contribute to pain relief and improved well-being.
  3. Immune System Function:

    • Positive beliefs and a positive mindset have been associated with better immune system function. The brain releases substances like neuropeptides that can enhance the activity of immune cells, contributing to overall health.
  4. Neurotransmitter Release:

    • Beliefs and emotions influence the release of neurotransmitters in the brain. Positive beliefs can stimulate the release of "feel-good" neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, contributing to a sense of happiness and well-being.
  5. Inflammation Response:

    • Chronic negative beliefs and stress can contribute to systemic inflammation, which is linked to various health conditions. On the flip side, positive beliefs and a more optimistic outlook may help reduce inflammation.
  6. Pain Perception:

    • Beliefs about pain and one's ability to cope with it can influence the perception of pain. Positive beliefs may lead to the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, providing relief.
  7. Cardiovascular Health:

    • Positive beliefs and emotions are associated with improved cardiovascular health. The release of stress hormones in response to negative beliefs can contribute to conditions like high blood pressure, while positive beliefs may have a protective effect.
  8. Hormonal Balance:

    • Beliefs can influence hormonal balance, including the regulation of hormones related to mood and stress. For example, beliefs about self-worth and confidence can impact the release of hormones like oxytocin and reduce feelings of stress.

It's crucial to note that the mind-body connection is complex, and the influence of belief on body chemistry varies among individuals. While positive beliefs can contribute to better health outcomes, it's not a substitute for medical care. Integrating positive beliefs, stress management, and a healthy lifestyle can collectively contribute to overall well-being.

Does this motivate you to choose what beliefs you hold on to?  Doing so could most definitely change your life for the better - if you so choose.

This mind/belief - body connection is all very well documented, but it's not just today's physicians who support the belief - outcome connection.

The bible has much to say about belief and the outcomes you can expect - in this case, a belief as a knowing without doubt:

  • John 11:25-26
"Everything is possible for one who believes"
  • Matthew 21:22
"And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive"
  • Mark 11:24
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
  • James 1:6
"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind"

So what if we used belief to create our best lives?  What if we held a BELIEF, an unshakeable KNOWING that things get to work out for us, that things get to be the way we desire them to be.  What if we were that powerful?

We are.

You are.

So decide what you want - what is calling you - and get busy believing.

I love you!
